In a recent article entitled Exploring Literacy on the Internet,  in The Reading Teacher distributed by the International Reading Association, Donald J. Leu, Jr. researches the impact technology and computers have in the classroom. The issue, it seems, is that teachers just don’t have the time to incorporate computers and the Internet into their already full schedules.

Computers are popping up in classrooms in all parts of the world. Preparing children for the future doesn’t just end at teaching them the basics: reading, writing and ‘rithmatic! Today’s children must also know how to use computers and the Internet.

Here are some ways you can incorporate computers and reading into your curriculum:

Encourage children to visit the computer. Teach them how to operate and log onto the Internet. Have the Wee Ones E-magazine web address readily available– www.weeonesmag.com.

Book mark Wee Ones E-magazine on your classroom computer. It is a safe, child-oriented site.

Have students choose an article or story. Read it. Then write a summary or a sentence or two about what they liked about the story.

Check our archives to find articles and stories on a particular topic that relates to a theme you are teaching in the classroom. Archives are posted for one year.

We’re working on an easy reference window where you can click on a subject and see all the articles and stories we have related to that subject.

If students have a computer at home, encourage them to visit Wee Ones as an alternative to reading a book.

We are always looking for ideas on how we can make it easier for you to teach technology and reading. If you any ideas or suggestions, please e-mail us at: info@weeonesmag.com.
